Digital Extremes, the developer of Warframe, has taken a surprising step. The studio has begun distributing Dark Sector, a sci-fi third-person shooter released in 2008, for free on Steam.
Dark Sector is free for a short time
Digital Extremes is preparing to announce the Warframe: 1999 expansion pack in the coming days. In this context, in order to stay on the agenda, it started to distribute Dark Sector, which was released in 2008, for free on Steam. The campaign will continue until 30 November.
Although Dark Sector received mixed reactions when it was first released, it managed to gain a strong audience on Steam. Accordingly, it also has a ‘Very Positive’ user rating. The game centres on Hayden Tenno, an American agent fighting a viral outbreak in the fictional Eastern European country of Lasria.
Players use the glaive weapon, a result of Tenno’s own Technocyte virus infection, to fight enemies. This campaign also highlights the release of Warframe: 1999, which will feature the European city of Helvania caught in the middle of conflict in 1999.
Digital Extremes emphasised the connection between the two games, stating that the concepts developed for Dark Sector significantly influenced Warframe. Warframe: 1999 is also expected to be released next week.
